Have a Firecracker of a good time on the Fourth at Churchill [Sports]

Instead of lighting a firecracker and losing a finger or two on the Fourth of July head to Churchill Downs where general admission is free and beer and hot dogs are $1 all day.

Instead of lighting a firecracker and losing a finger or two on the Fourth of July, maybe you should just watch a Firecracker.

The Firecracker Handicap that is.

The Grade II turf race, which marks the return of 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird to Churchill Downs, highlights Sunday's final day of the 42-day Spring Meet at the Central Ave. track.  

Kiddari wins feature on final "Downs After Dark" of the summer [Sports]

Kiddari held off Vertical Vision to win the $66,500 feature race Friday night at Churchill Downs in front of a record "Downs After Dark" crowd.

Kiddari seems to like Churchill Downs, just like her momma.

The 4-year-old homebred daughter of 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, won the feature race Friday night in front of a "Downs After Dark" record crowd of 32,481 at Churchill Downs.

Mine That Bird could race at Churchill Downs this weekend [Sports]

The 2009 Kentucky Derby winner hasn't won a race since winning the Run for the Roses, but he looked very good in a Monday workout at Churchill and could race here Saturday or Sunday.

The last time we saw Mine That Bird the gelding was struggling to a ninth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic last November.

The next time we see the 2009 Kentucky Derby winner racing again might be this weekend at Churchill Downs.

Mine That Bird had a "bullet" workout on the track Monday and could return there for his first post-Breeders' Cup race this weekend.

Mine that Bird wins 135th Kentucky Derby

Mine that Bird and jockey Calvin Borel bested a competitive field to win the 135th Kentucky Derby.
Mine that Bird--a 50-1 shot--and jockey Calvin Borel bested a competitive field to win the 135th Kentucky Derby, taking the $1,417,200 purse. The horse is owned by Lamantia, Blackburn & Needham/Betz Thorouighbreds.
