Louisville's Jennifer Lawrence loses out on Best Actress Oscar to Natalie Portman [Movies]

Louisville native was nominated for Academy Award for her role in the drama "Winter's Bone."

Despite a strong breakthrough performance in the romantic comedy drama "Winter's Bone," Louisville's Jennifer Lawrence lost out on the Oscar for Best Actress to Natalie Portman for her role in "Black Swan." To answer the all-important Louisville question: Lawrence didn't go to high school here; she attended Kammerer Middle School but left the city for New York at 14 years old to begin her acting career (but it would've been Ballard High School if she'd stuck around).

The second annual Derby City Film Festival kicks off Friday

Need an event to quench your movie thirst before next month's Oscars? This film festival features what one co-founder describes as "true" independent movies.

 

The Oscars aren't until March 7. And to help hold you movie lovers over until then, head to this weekend's (Feb. 19 to 21) second annual Derby City Film Festival, taking place at the Clifton Center (2117 Payne St.). Prices range from $6 for a single screening to $40 for a three-day pass.
