After three straight wins, the axles on the UofL bandwagons are getting a workout as a steady stream of naysayers are jumping back aboard. During that late December/early January slide that saw the Cardinals lose 5 of 7 games, Louisville fans went from apoplectic to apathetic. Coach Rick Pitino’s fan base was eroding with the losses and his head scratch-inducing statements before and after games. Now, with three straight victories and 17 wins on the season, Cardinal fans are flocking back and here’s why they may not be in for heartbreak after all.
How far has the Louisville Cardinal basketball “brand” fallen? Consider this headline from the Washington Post: ‘Louisville rebounds from blowout with close loss at Marquette.’ Yes, the national perception of UofL basketball is that losing is considered a “rebound.” However, the NCAA tournament committee won’t look at moral victories as a reason to hand out an at-large bid to the Cardinals.
After falling from the ranks of the unbeaten in Wednesday’s 71-68 loss to Georgetown, Rick Pitino said his team would not hold a press conference prior to Saturday’s matchup against Kentucky. From a coaching standpoint, it’s probably a wise move to not put your players through another round of questioning and instead have get it over with while still steaming about their first loss of the season.
Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino announced Tuesday, that he will no longer be coaching at the University of Louisville once his contract ends in 2017.
"When you're 59, you're realistic that you don't have a whole lot of years left," Pitino said at a news conference before the No. 4 Cardinals play No. 12 Georgetown on Wednesday. "My contract's going to run out in 2017. I'm not coaching any more after that."
After knocking off College of Charleston 69-62 Tuesday night at the KFC Yum! Center, UofL head coach Rick Pitino has decided to add another game before Friday’s scheduled meeting with Western Kentucky.
The opposing team will be comprised of Lebron James and the ghost of Wilt Chamberlain. Also, Artis Gilmore has perfected time travel technology and will send his 1974 self to 2011 to take part along with the three members of the Fab Five you can actually remember.
In the words of former Arizona Cardinals Coach Dennis Green, "They are who we thought they were," and Tuesday night in the KFC YUM! Center, College of Charleston was just that- who we thought they were.
Scouting Memphis
Memphis, No. 11 in the AP’s preseason poll, dropped out of the top 25 this week with its 76-72 home loss to unbeaten Murray State. The Tigers (5-3) return all five starters from last year’s 25-10 team and was the preseason pick to win Conference USA
Sophomore guard Will Barton leads Memphis with 20.4 points and 7.6 rebounds a game. The fast-paced Memphis attack is 16th in the nation at 81.1 points a contest.
Testy rivalry
The Indiana Hoosiers garlic burped in the face of Big Blue Nation Saturday with a gutsy 73-72 win over the undefeated and top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats in Bloomington. Christian Watford’s last second three-pointer preserved Indiana’s perfect record (now 9-0) while bringing the young bunch of Wildcats back to Earth…at least momentarily.
