The Cincinnati Reds went into Spring Training looking for a leftfielder.

The Reds were set in right field with former Bat Jay Bruce, while Drew Stubbs had the inside track on center after his strong finish to the ‘09 season, but “Who’s in left?” was one of several questions facing the team as players reported to Arizona in late February.

On July 1, 2009 a 21-year-old Cuban pitcher with rocket for left arm walked out of a hotel in Rotterdam, Netherlands and stepped into a waiting car driven by a friend. Aroldis Chapman, arguably the best southpaw pitching prospect in the world, was defecting.

Chapman gets the call, heads to Reds [Sports]

Aroldis Chapman (left), the left-handed pitching phenom for the Louisville Bats, is expected to be called up by the parent Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. At least he left some lasting memories for Louisville fans, including his going-out-in-a-blaze-of-glory 105-mile-per-hour fastball in his last appearance for the Bats.

At least Aroldis Chapman left Louisville with something to remember him by...a 105-mile-per-hour fastball.

The Louisville Bats' left-handed pitching phenom hit that triple-digit number on the radar gun at Louisville Slugger Field last Friday night in the ninth inning against the Columbus Clippers. As it turns out that will likely be the last time we see Chapman in a Bats' uniform. He is expected to be called up by the parent Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.

Chris Valaika didn't know that he had a Wikipedia page.

"Do I really?" he asked, surprised, one day last week as he relaxed in the Louisville Bats dugout before a game.

"Yes," I tell him, then add that it also says that he is known for "a wide stance with a small stride."

"Wide stance, huh, that's pretty good," he said.

What would it say if he wrote it?

The Louisville Bats had an atrocious April, but they bounced back in May. Here is a two-month recap of the Bats' season so far.

The first month of the Triple-A baseball season was less than ideal for the Louisville Bats.

"That's quite an understatement," Louisville manager Rick Sweet corrects a reporter, who didn't feel like he had to state the obvious, after a recent game. "It was the worst month I've had since I've been here."

In the offseason Louisville Slugger Field added a third number to the outfield sign that registers a pitcher's miles per hour on a throw.
By coincidence the Louisville Bats also added a pitcher who can hit triple digits.
