It was September 1984. Nationally, the United States was still coming down from the high of the supremely successful Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where one of the biggest stars was Louisville’s own Mary T. Meagher (a.k.a. Madame Butterfly), while also preparing for a Presidential election.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan declared July "National Ice Cream Month", and the third Sunday in July "National Ice Cream Day." Little did he know the effects of that proclamation a generation later.
