Concert Review: The Ladybirds [Music]

The Ladybirds know their Rock 'n' Roll
At Zazoo's an up and coming new joint in St. Matthews, where you wouldn't expect Rock 'n' Roll to be alive is where strong females took the stage on Friday May 11, 2012. The Ladybirds introduced three outstanding bands with their Garage and Punk Rock style.

First up was She Might Bite from Louisville, an all girl band, with a distinct Rock 'n Roll sound adding some punk to it, played some of their soon to be released new album, you can hear them on shemightbite.com.

Fried Scallops at The Fishery [Food & Dining]

fried fish is hard to spiff up and hard to do wrong.

When I moved to Louisville many many moons ago, as we were shifting our things into a new place, my dad and I decided to look for lunch. Strolling down Lexington Road, we saw The Fishery, a cozy looking little place straight out of Mayberry.

Sports legends of the Ville: The Actor [Sports]

If playing a major role in one of the greatest sports films of all time doesn't make you a sports legend of the Ville, I don't know what will. In this Sports legends segment I take a look at legendary actor and native Louisvillian, Ned Beatty.

Ned Beatty might not be the first name one thinks of when they think of sports in the city of Louisville, theatre certainly. Appearing in countless notable films and being a several time Oscar and Emmy Award nominee, the Louisville native who spent much of his formative years in the St. Matthews area is highly accomplished in his field; arguably the most well-known character actor currently working.

Light up the Night: Douglas Keeney presents space photography at the Library [Books]

Prepare to be amazed with the grandeur and the glow of our Earth at night. Douglas Keeney will present Lights of Mankind: The Earth at Night as Seen from Space at the Library's St. Matthew's branch tomorrow, December 7th, at 7pm

It has been said that the night belongs to lovers.  I suppose “said” is a subtle term – wailed as a raw and sexual anthem is perhaps more appropriate.  Being the diurnal creatures that we are biologically meant to be, the nighttime has forever held an intoxicating allure for our more basic instincts.  The mystique and danger of the dark is something that excites our primal senses but also ignites our fears.  Empires (both corporate and historical) have been built on the glow of illuminated darkness; both our pockets and our natural resources pay dearly

Celebrate the season with A Nutcracker Storytime featuring the Louisville Ballet at the Library [Books]

Revisit this classic Holiday story with some special guests from the Louisville Ballet! Family storytime at the Library just got a little more magical.

For many adults, the Holiday season can be a time of hair-raising stress.  There are relatives to be wrangled, pies to be baked, trees to be trimmed and endless rounds of wondering if Santa will be able to afford all the right presents.  Let’s not even talk about the shopping situation at The Mall.

Doing the Rumba [Louisville Magazine]

I traveled to Cuba in 1998 and, at the tables of several families there, tasted food I still savor: pork marinated in fresh orange juice, cumin and garlic; a simple breakfast of crispy Cuban bread and newly laid eggs purloined from hens cooped outside kitchen windows. Those memories made me wonder whether Marcos Lorenzo and Fernando Martinez would succeed when they opened their Cuban restaurant, Havana Rumba, in St. Matthews in 2004.
