Bellarmine students start the new year with storm cleanup [Colleges]

Today's Day of Service to include park repair

Classes just started at Bellarmine University, but nearly 600 incoming freshmen will leave campus today to take part in “Knights in Action: Day of Service.”

The Shell must go on! Storm Damage [Highlands]

Saturday's storm left Highlands with damage and lack of power/cable/internet . Most notable and perhaps ironic damage was the billboard on Bardstown Rd that states the EPA wants to take coal jobs away.

The Shell station on Bardstown Road near the Gardiner Lane shopping center remained open despite the giant billboard crashing in to the pump area during the storm on Saturday, August 13.

I find it perhaps a little ironic that Mother Nature took out a billboard prompting people to fight against the EPA in order to keep coal jobs in tact.

The steel support posts of the billboard  were twisted and bent.

Louisville's snow routes map - find out what streets have been plowed [Technology]

A snow storm is a brewing and though that means a snow day for some, others still have to fight the elements. Find out when a route was last salted, pretreated, or plowed using Louisville's interactive snow routes map.

I can't really give a fair assessment of the tool, as I only attempted to give it a whirl on one occasion using my uber geeky Macbook; which tends to have issues from time to time with compatibility.

Indiana University Southeast sends humorous voicemail to students during tornado warning [Southern Indiana]

Let's just hope nobody followed one particular piece of advice

A friend of mine, who takes some classes at Indiana University Southeast, got a funny voicemail and email from the school during yesterday afternoon's tornado warning. Most of the alert was fine, informing students to "take cover immediately on the lowest level of your building away from windows!" (Yeah, without that exclamation point I wouldn't have taken it seriously either.) As for the end of the automated message, well:

"If you cannot reach a building, seek shelter immediately in a ditch or ravine. Please remain calm. Thank you."

Blizzard panic has inspired me to share a family recipe

The combination of milk, bread, and eggs (which are currently stocked up in cupboards all over the city) is quite delicious.

I'm no different than most and stopped by to pick up a few staples yesterday. Thanks to my mom, here is a way to help combine and consume your oversupply since Blizzard '10 seems to have skipped us.

CINNAMON SYRUP 1c. sugar 1/2 c. light corn syrup 1/4 c. water 1 c. chopped walnuts 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 c. whipping cream or evaporated milk
