Instead of lighting a firecracker and losing a finger or two on the Fourth of July, maybe you should just watch a Firecracker.
The Firecracker Handicap that is.

Even casual horse-racing fans knew after May 1's 136th Kentucky Derby that it was only a matter of time before Churchill Downs ran a big race under the lights.

Calvin Borel won't be coming off the rail, at least early on, in Saturday's 135th Preakness Stakes.
That's because the jockey and Super Saver, the horse he won the 136th Kentucky Derby on, will start from the No. 8 position in the 12-horse field at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore as determined by this late afternoon's post position draw. The Todd Pletcher-trained WinStar Farm's horse is the early 5-2 favorite in the 1 3/16-mile second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.

If Monday is any indication it looks like Super Saver has plenty saved up for Saturday's Preakness.
In his first workout since winning the 136th Kentucky Derby, the colt worked three furlongs in an easy and breezy 36.60 seconds with jockey Calvin Borel aboard at Churchill Downs.
"I was very pleased with the work," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "We are very encouraged by what we've seen since the Derby from him. Everything is good. I got him in 36 (seconds) and out in 49.

General Quarters out-dueled favored Court Vision to win the 24th running of the $578,100 Grade I Woodford Reserve Turf Classic by a neck in the 10th race Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs.
Rafael Bejarano rallied the horse, who was 10th in the Kentucky Derby last year, past Court Vision in the mid-stretch. Running on the inside, General Quarters overtook Court Vision at the sixteenth pole and held on, covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1 minute, 53.42 seconds on the "yielding" Matt Winn Turf Course.
