Have a Firecracker of a good time on the Fourth at Churchill [Sports]

Instead of lighting a firecracker and losing a finger or two on the Fourth of July head to Churchill Downs where general admission is free and beer and hot dogs are $1 all day.

Instead of lighting a firecracker and losing a finger or two on the Fourth of July, maybe you should just watch a Firecracker.

The Firecracker Handicap that is.

The Grade II turf race, which marks the return of 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird to Churchill Downs, highlights Sunday's final day of the 42-day Spring Meet at the Central Ave. track.

Kiddari held off Vertical Vision to win the $66,500 feature race Friday night at Churchill Downs in front of a record "Downs After Dark" crowd.

Kiddari seems to like Churchill Downs, just like her momma.

The 4-year-old homebred daughter of 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, won the feature race Friday night in front of a "Downs After Dark" record crowd of 32,481 at Churchill Downs.

Mine That Bird could race at Churchill Downs this weekend [Sports]

The 2009 Kentucky Derby winner hasn't won a race since winning the Run for the Roses, but he looked very good in a Monday workout at Churchill and could race here Saturday or Sunday.

By Josh Cook

The last time we saw Mine That Bird the gelding was struggling to a ninth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic last November.

The next time we see the 2009 Kentucky Derby winner racing again might be this weekend at Churchill Downs.

Mine That Bird had a "bullet" workout on the track Monday and could return there for his first post-Breeders' Cup race this weekend.

Rachel cruised to a 10 1/2-length victory over Distinctive Dixie, covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1 minute 48.78 seconds - just shy of a track record for that distance.

Breeders' Cup will end under the lights at Churchill Downs [Sports]

The Breeders' Cup, which will be Nov. 5-6 at Churchill Downs, will finish under the new permanent lights at the track both days. The final race of the weekend, the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, will go off around 6:45 p.m. Nov. 6.

By Josh Cook

Even casual horse-racing fans knew after May 1's 136th Kentucky Derby that it was only a matter of time before Churchill Downs ran a big race under the lights.

That time will be Nov. 5-6 in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Races will finish at approximately 7:30 p.m. on the first day, while the second day of horse racing's Super Bowl will conclude with the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic at around 6:45 p.m.

Super Saver to start Preakness from No. 8 post; Lookin At Lucky in No. 7 [Sports]

Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, and jockey Calvin Borel, drew the No. 8 post for Saturday's 135th Preakness Stakes and is the early 5-2 favorite for the Baltimore race.

By Josh Cook

Calvin Borel won't be coming off the rail, at least early on, in Saturday's 135th Preakness Stakes.

That's because the jockey and Super Saver, the horse he won the 136th Kentucky Derby on, will start from the No. 8 position in the 12-horse field at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore as determined by this late afternoon's post position draw. The Todd Pletcher-trained WinStar Farm's horse is the early 5-2 favorite in the 1 3/16-mile second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.

If Monday is any indication it looks like Super Saver has plenty saved up for Saturday's Preakness.

In his first workout since winning the 136th Kentucky Derby, the colt worked three furlongs in an easy and breezy 36.60 seconds with jockey Calvin Borel aboard at Churchill Downs.

"I was very pleased with the work," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "We are very encouraged by what we've seen since the Derby from him. Everything is good. I got him in 36 (seconds) and out in 49.
