Spend your Derby Day in West Louisville [Food and Dining]

The Unlimited are playing Derby shows at the Nia Center this weeeknd
The annual Screaming Eagles block party on 28th street and The Unlimited's R&B party at the Nia Center are fun ways to party down in West Louisville this Derby day.

There are so many Derby events going on, that it's often difficult to keep up with what's happening where. 

If you're in West Louisville, or you're looking to add some diversity to your Derby celebrations, here are a couple of fun events going on west of 9th street.

University of Louisville program plans to celebrate neighborhoods by pioneering a 10k [Opinion: The Arena]

A University of Louisville student's idea has developed into a 10k run/walk that may change the personality of Louisville for the better.

Anyone who sits down with Stacy Bailey-Ndiaye, interim director of the Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of Louisville, is sure to notice her infectious smile, positive attitude and honest passion for social change in Louisville and the world.

Metro Council Ad Hoc Committee on Vacant Properties Meets in Shawnee [Opinion: The Arena]

A very well attended meeting in Louisville's Shawnee neighborhood discussed vacant properties, data surrounding them and public health issues such as opossums as tennants.

Yesterday afternoon Metro Council representatives Cheri Bryant-Hamilton, Attica Scott, Kelly Downard and Jerry Miller participated in a public meeting about housing, and specifically vacant and abandoned properties.

Councilwoman Scott facilitated the meeting.

The meeting, held at a tiny community meeting place on Amy street in Shawnee, was very well attended by various members of the community.

Kentucky's public school system is ranked among the worst in the nation. One active group of concerned citizens is actively fighting for choices for black children in Louisville.

Children are our future, or so we keep saying. 

It seems as though lawmakers in Kentucky, and Jefferson county specifically, are focused on ensuring that adults' political and financial interests come before the interests of our children.

In saying "our children," the implication here lies specifically on black children living in the commonwealth of Kentucky.
