Food for Thought: Civil War Diaries

Take an in-depth look at the diaries of two young ladies who were divided over Civil War issues. One is a slave owner who opposes Lincoln, but remains loyal to the Union. The other is a vehement supporter of the Union who does not own slaves. Both diaries describe the rifts between families and friends caused by friends and loved ones fighting on opposite sides of the war. The diaries also show lives that are refreshingly normal at times, as the women reflect on travels, parties, courtships and local gossip.

Looking into the eyes of local food at the RiverSong Farm Chicken Dinner Workshop [Fitness and health]

In an exploration of responsible meat eating, I joined the folks at RiverSong Farm in Taylorsville to kill, scald, pluck, and eviscerate my own chicken dinner. If you're interested in sustainable living, so can you!

It's not uncommon for me to roast a chicken for my family. I do it throughout most of the year for dinner and soup. But, today, I'm roasting a chicken that I killed with my own hands. He was the first kill of my life. In an instant fueled with fear, challenge, respect, and a bit of something I've yet to name, I became a different person. The goal was to eat local, and to look into the eyes of the animal I would eat.
