KMAC, located on historic West Main Street in Louisville, is a nonprofit organization that has promoted and supported art and craft excellence in Kentucky for 30 years. Through a unique collaboration with artists, education programs and exhibitions, over 100,000 participants benefit from KMAC's offerings each year, with approximately 60,000 annual visitors to the Museum's facility. KMAC, which boasts a growing membership base of over 500 active members--artists and non-artists--was founded in 1981 as the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation. KMAC currently represents over 600 Kentucky and regional craft artists in its retail and exhibition galleries. No other organization in Metro Louisville provides the public with in-depth art education programs that are based on the art and craft heritage of Kentucky.
In addition to KMAC's permanent collection of Kentucky artwork, displayed year-round in the Museum's third-floor gallery space, KMAC annually offers at least nine large-scale exhibitions in its gallery spaces, with additional displays in other parts of the Museum. KMAC's exhibitions and programming attract visitors from every state and six continents. While KMAC’s primary focus is contemporary craft and folk art, the museum also shows paintings, prints, drawings, video and photography. Complementing the exhibits is related programming designed to engage and inform the public.
Approximately 25,000 children in Kentucky, Southern Indiana and the surrounding region annually benefit from KMAC's unique education programs. Over 30 different Kentucky artists teach in-depth workshops and residencies for youth, most of whom have multiple factors that place them at risk for academic success. In 2010-2011, KMAC reached over 100 schools, libraries and community centers with art education programming that included: field trip workshops and gallery tours; artists-in residence programs; hands-on workshops, community center programs and summer craft camps; teacher in-service training sessions; traveling craft art education suitcases, and art workshops for adults.
KMAC also boasts an award-winning Sales Gallery shop that features Kentucky-created works of art that include ceramics, glass, metal, fiber, wood, jewelry, painting and folk art. The Sales Gallery is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Kentucky Arts Council's "Craft Marketer of the Year" in 2009 and 2006, and finalist in 2008.
KMAC's Corporate Sales Department coordinates KMAC artists and other team members with business projects large and small, from inception to completion. Recent art installation projects include Norton Brownsboro Hospital, Kosair Childrens Medical Center-Brownsboro, and the University of Louisville Health Care Outpatient Center.
