Outward Bound, the international outdoor education organization, is hosting “Heroes at Home,” a celebration to pay tribute to veterans and raise funding for the Outward Bound Veterans’ Program at Bowman Field this Saturday, December 4.

“With hundreds of soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan each day, the need for services is greater than ever,” says Tracey Roberts of the Louisville Faculty and Friends Group. “That is why we are hosting this event: to raise awareness of the need for support services for our veterans.” The 1940s theme was chosen because in the wake of World War II, the nation pulled together to support U.S. troops here and abroad, from rationing to mourning the fallen to celebrating the living. Roberts adds that this event is "a small attempt to remind people of our soldiers’ sacrifice and to engage everyone in addressing the needs of our returning troops."

Founded in 1941, the nonprofit Outward Bound currently enrolls 200,000 students per year. Largely viewed as a self-reliance course for at-risk teens, Outward Bound offers programs to people from all walks of life—from families to individuals to women’s groups to businesses—in 40 schools around the world. Programs include mountaineering, desert trekking, dogsledding and water expeditions. Outward Bound’s veteran programs are engineered specifically to help returning soldiers build a supportive community with other war veterans while facilitating readjustment and transition challenges in the outdoors.

The evening will include 1940s-era music by the West Market Street Stompers, dance lessons by the Louisville Swing Dance Society, a silent auction (including an Outward Bound Florida Keys Sailing course), hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Everyone is invited to wear 1940s era costume or military dress.

“Heroes at Home” will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Bowman Field Administrative Building, 2817 Taylorsville Road in the Highlands. Admission is a minimum donation $50 to Outward Bound Veteran’s Expedition Program and will support programs and services for our veterans. To register, visit the Outward Bound Heroes at Home page.
