Enjoy the musical theatre experience to the fullest with specially created local brew! PNC Broadway in Louisville brings the spirit of Dublin, Ireland to Louisville with its upcoming production of the musical Once. The Bluegrass Brewing Company (BBC) is assisting in this endeavor to bring as much of Ireland as possible to Derby City. Brewmaster Andrew Dimery created the Guy’s Irish Red specifically in honor of the production of Once. This beer, brewed in the style of an Irish red with a malt background and a slight bitterness of hops, will be available at the BBC St. Matthews and all other locations on Friday, January 9th.

This is not the first time Broadway in Louisville and BBC have partnered up. Last season, BBC crafted Lurch’s Lager for the opening production of The Addam’s Family. They also created Jam Session Ale for the 2014 Broadway tour of Million Dollar Quartet.  With this partnership, the local business and the arts support each other in a wonderful symbiosis; it pleases three of the five senses in one go.

Once is based on the Academy Award-winning film of the same name. It tells the tale of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant who are drawn together by their love of music. Their friendship evolves into a powerful and complex romance, which is heightened by the rawness of the songs they create together. It is a bold celebration of life and love. The film starred Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who are responsible for the music and lyrics in both the cinema and stage versions of Once.

The musical version of Once  not only features Hansard and Irglová's award-winning music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, but also includes numerous other notable, visionary artists in the crew. The book is written by award-winning Irish playwright and screenwriter Enda Walsh (Penelope, Hunger, The New Electric Ballroom). It is directed by the acclaimed Scottish director John Tiffany, who also directed Black Watch, movement by Steven Hoggett (Black Watch, American Idiot), and music and orchestrations by Marin Lowe (Mamma Mia!) Bob Crowley, set and costume design, and Natasha Katz, lighting design, have won multiple Tony awards.

Tickets for Once begin at $28 and are available in person at The Kentucky Center box office (501 W Main Street), by phone at 502-584-7777 or online.  For groups of 10 or more, contact Hilda Davis at 502-569-3060.

    About Rebecca Ball

As great lover of books and adventure, I grew up wanting to be anywhere else. I satiated some my wanderlust in the castles and expansive forests in Europe over the past few years. Now, I live in the city that will always be home with a cat who thinks she's a person.
