Lucero is one of the most loved bands in music right now.  In their seventeen years as a band they have managed to release 10 studio albums or EP’s – and become one of the most thrilling live shows on the planet.  Formed by a group of misfits that grew up submerged in the underground Punk rock scene of Memphis, rather than absorbing their hometown’s own rich musical history (the home of Sun Studios, Stax Records and Elvis Presley), makes it somewhat surprising if you consider the fact that their music seems to have come full circle from early punk rock to earthy country-blues oriented albums they make now.

"Nobody’s Darlings" was the band’s statement piece, confidently introducing Lucero to the national spotlight, when it was released in 2004.  The album immediately became a seminal alt-country classic.  The title track was a beautiful, close down the honky-tonk moment of introspection that inadvertently played as a first person indictment of our inebriated, self-indulged generation of misanthropes.  It’s a gritty, earnest elegy mourning the lives that Generation Y forgot to fight for, because we were blinded by a cloud of our own narcissism.

This weekend, lead singer and songwriter for Lucero, Ben Nichols, will be performing here in The River City – a town that endlessly supported the band and their music practically since their inception.  Having played in bars, music clubs and festivals all over the world, the band is known for their electrifying performances.  But when Nichols plays solo, it’s an acoustic guitar, the subtle rasp of his voice, and the songs.  All pretense is stripped back for an intimate performance that’s puts the craft work of songwriting on display, front and center – songs chosen from Lucero’s extensive catalog, or from Nichols’ own solo work “Last Pale Light in the West” and “Shelter.”

Ben Nichols will be performing Friday June 19th at Haymarket Whiskey Bar.  The show begins at 9:00 PM.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
