My father is – I am proud to say – a fine example of the generation that boomed forth post WWII. A recent newlywed and a profound lover of the Rolling Stones (as well as skull-patterned Chuck Taylors and Turquoise jewelry), he is a highly distinguished lad of 63. I wish I had known him in the 60s; the stories are incredible and highly-excellent drinking conversation. And while I personally find him brilliant and heroic in most every way, when it comes to the topic of physical health, he is far more likely to offer you Cheetos than explain the benefits whole grains for heart health (sorry to call you out, Papa). During the months of January and February, the Louisville Free Public Library will be featuring a series of Wednesday evening discussion programs geared towards Baby Boomers. Appropriately billed as the Boom Time Series, a team of local professionals will present on topics ranging from personal creativity to the truth about the bottles in the medicine cabinet, all designed to help Boomers age gracefully. January’s focus is “To Your Good Health” and will kick off this upcoming Wednesday, January 11th, with Dr. Bryant Stamford.
Dr. Stamford, an exercise physiologist and a long-time writer for the Courier-Journal’s “Body Shop” column, will enumerate the importance of staying active, staying knowledgeable and staying aware of your body as it changes through the years, as well as an as offering of helpful book recommendations for follow-up. The presentation begins at 6pm at the Library’s Main branch, with a Q & A to follow. The session will be moderated by Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, a board-certified family physician and the new director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness. Feed your Fritos to the birds (not actually recommended) and treat your body better with the Boom Time Series.
