Gary Gulman has an everyday, affable air to him when he’s on-stage.  He’s a giant, standing at 6’6, but he has generally calm and kind demeanor as he makes off-beat observations of life’s absurdities, plus a couple of jokes about his Jewish mother.

It’s possible you saw Gulman, along with comedians Robert Kelly and Dane Cook, when they participated in the HBO reality series Dane Cook’s Tourgasm.  Letting cameras follow them on a nationwide college tour at the absolute peak of Cook’s popularity.  Gulman was portrayed sincere, but horribly insecure – which I would imagine are two traits that one would find in just about anyone who dares to do stand-up comedy in front of real people.

The Gentle Giant of Comedy finished as a finalist in not one, but two seasons of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and has appeared on every late night show you can imagine, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Conan.

Gulman will be performing all weekend at The Laughing Derby, Thursday May 15th through Saturday May 17th.  The show times vary, but tickets are $12.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
