Writer + performer + producer + filmmaker = storytellerDivinity Rose sums up her range of pursuits--writer, performer, producer, filmmaker--as a storyteller. She's not just telling her own story though; she's helping other people share theirs as well. Through her regular open mic nights, website, and special events, Rose encourages other people to embark on the path that's most fulfilling to them. "I have people that follow me all over the globe," Rose said. "It's moving toward my own world and enterprise," she said, adding that she started attracting followers with her weekly uplifting spiritual newsletter. The nameNo, Divinity Rose is not her birth name. "Awaken from the dead; divinity rose within me," she said of the name she's been using for three years. It refers to the realization "that you're living one life that's not really the life you think you should lead." The solution for her, and others too the Louisville-native hopes, is "just making a change in your life or dying, metaphysically speaking, in that life and creating a new one." Her background, however, probably made her more likely for a new name than most people "Growing up in foster homes, and even before that, my mom instantly married a guy that wasn't my dad while she was still pregnant with me. So I never had my own last name. I had all this identity was always by what other people were feeding me." "That name too [Divinity Rose] was given to me by somebody else. It allowed me to go 'You know what? That fits.'"Two world premiers todayThe party for the world premier of 'The Dead Walk the Earth', a musical farce by Rose and Tony Minzenberger, is at 8 p.m. tonight at Diamond's Pub and Billiards (3814 Frankfort Ave.). For more details about the zombie cowgirl music video (a phrase making its Internet premier in this article) see's article on recommendations for this weekend.Shot in late May, what started off as a project involving her and some friends with film expertise "just kind of steamrolled," Rose said. They ended up shooting on a 500-acre farm with four cameras and had eight hours of footage, which has since been whittled down to a three to five minute video. "The videos I make are like pits stops into different worlds," Rose said.Thrive in the Gypsy CourtyardAnd every Monday at Diamond's and every third Thursday at Carly Rae's (103 W. Oak St.) Rose hosts Subrosa: The Gypsy Courtyard, an open-mic event anchored by paid feature performers and with a supportive environment that encourages emerging artists to come to the stage as well This past Monday the eclectic event featured a singer/songwriter (the surprisingly powerfulAmanda Lucas), a magician, and a comedian -- and that was just in the first hour. The events at both bars run from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.For more information: The premier party for The Dead Walk the Earth" isn't the only event in Louisville this weekend.
