Louisville lost one of its most unique dining options when Tumbleweed closed its restaurant on River Road last November. No more Margarita Mondays with unlimited tortilla chips and salsa on the riverside. Now the only place on the river to take your visiting friends and relatives to dinner is Joe’s Crab Shack, which is undeniably tasty and supplies its customers with a fun atmosphere, but it would certainly be nice to have more riverside dining options. And what about a new original restaurant to make Louisville even more unique?

The folks at Falls City Hospitality Group have got it covered.

Earlier this year, the Falls City Hospitality Group (FCHG) signed a contracted leasing agreement reserving the vacated building at 2301 River Road. And late last week, they announced their plans to transform the property into Doc’s Cantina, a brand new South of the Border restaurant.

FCHG’s first Louisville restaurant, Doc Crow’s Southern Smokehouse & Raw Bar, opened in 2011 at 127 West Main Street on Louisville’s historic Whiskey Row. Since opening, the restaurant has been nothing but successful and is considered a favorite among the city’s local whiskey fanatics and a unique dinning attraction for tourists as well.

Construction and renovations of the former Tumbleweed location will begin in late summer, and FCHG plans to open the new restaurant at the end of the year. FCHG managing partner, Brett Davis said he was very excited about the building’s reconstruction plans.

“We plan to take advantage of the unique location at Doc Cantina’s by opening up the part of the restaurant facing the river,” he said.

The menu for Doc Cantina’s is being developed by Doc Crow’s head chef, Jonathan Schwarz, and FCHG beverage director, Jackie Zykan. Though the full menu is currently unavailable, it’s safe to say we can expect a full list of Tex-Mex inspired original dishes, a long list of original cocktails and plenty of tequila! Perfect for a one-of-a-kind riverside dining experience!
