Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery, on 815 Market Street, is celebrating literacy and children's literature with a whimsical exhibit. Flame Run's "Bookworms" features glass interpretations of characters from well-loved children's books. On Friday, November 1, Flame Run is hosting a "Bookworms" reception from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Children are welcome; there will be story time, glass blowing demonstrations, and the option to blow your own ornament, with proceeds from the ornaments going to support the Center for Family Literacy

Books and characters represented in Flame Run's "Bookworms" include:

    Curious George by H.A. Rey

    Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (look at that tiny hookah!)

    The Book of Kells

Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe (I love that this piece makes use of opaque glass to represent the vegetables that bunnicula has sucked the juice out of. I literally squealed when I saw it.)

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White (the spider is made of glass,  but it looks so real the curator of the exhibit confided that she almost smashed it when she was unwrapping the piece)

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

Please note that these photographs do not show the whole scuptures, but only the exquisite details. Other works of literature represented in sculpture include Winnie the Pooh, the Harry Potter books, The Hobbit, and many more. Flame Run is partnering with the National Center for Family Literacy as a co-sponsor for this exhibit, which features the work of several Louisville artists. "Bookworms" is totally free and runs through November 23, 2013.
