All hail the return of Freakwater!

Freakwater is a locally hatched band that formed among Louisville’s streets and sidewalks over two-and-a-half decades ago.  They were making Alternative Country cool, at a time when Alternative country didn’t even exist.  Fronted by Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin – the band’s supporting cast of musicians has rotated in and out over the years.

Freakwater never really breaks up, they just go on extended hiatus so Bean and Irwin can pursue other projects (both of which have released solo albums and worked in other bands), but periodically they will reconvene for a new album or highly buzzed about tour of great indie-rock venues – and then they disappear again. They have released 7 albums through Chicago’s Thrill Jockey label, and appeared in the 1994 cult classic “Half-Cocked.”

Freakwater will be doing a long overdue hometown show tonight at The New Vintage, Jaye Jayle and Drunken Prayer will also be on the bill.  Show starts at 9:00 PM and tickets are $10-$12.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
