    Bit to Do

One of the best things about the great city of Louisville is that there’s always something new going on. There’s always some place new to explore and something new to see unlike anything you’ve seen before. It seems as if this city is always sprouting up something exciting. And at Louisville’s Locust Grove, something has sprouted that has certainly caused some excitement.

For the first time in 50 years, Louisville has a hemp crop. And Locust Grove is inviting everyone out this Sunday to celebrate it at its first ever Hemp Festival.

And we’re not talking about a hemp festival like Bonnaroo, people. We’re talking about a day to learn about the cultivation of the plant itself and the dozens of ways that it can be used in creating fibers, food and fuel.

Several vendors will be in attendance offering information about the plant, selling a variety of hemp-made items and even giving out free samples!

And along with screenings of “Hemp for Victory” and “Bringing It Home,” both films about hemp, other festivities will include demonstrations of hemp spinning, growing and paper making, plus tons of fun activities for kids. The festival will also feature a number of special guest speakers including Kentucky’s Agriculture Commissioner, James Comer.

In traditional festival fashion, Locust Grove will be hosting several popular food trucks serving up delicious original fare. And for those seeking a less traditional meal, the farm will be opening the doors to its Hemp Café for the festival. Staying true to its name, the Hemp Café will be serving foods made with hemp and even hemp beer.

    That’s right guys, hemp beer.

And what’s a summertime festival without music? The South Fork Travelers will be performing live in afternoon followed by an evening performance by Appalatin.

This all-ages festival will take place at Locust Grove on Sunday, August 9 from 12 - 9 p.m. Admission is $5 for each adult and free for children 12 and younger. For more information and directions, visit Locust Grove’s website. And be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chairs for the outdoor film screenings!
