Honoring the Animals Vigil Set for National Pet Memorial Day
    Print this page

Animal people know this painful fact: The older we get, the longer the list grows of pets we’ve loved and lost.

This Sunday evening, September 14, an animal blessing and candlelight vigil will be held at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Woodbourne Avenue.

The Honoring the Animals event coincides with National Pet Memorial Day, designated by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries as the second Sunday in September.

The evening’s activities are presented by Chance’s Spot, a nonprofit that works with pet owners and professionals in the areas of pet loss and grief.

The candlelight vigil begins at 7:00 p.m. and animals on leashes are welcome. Candles will be provided; you may also bring your own.

Before the vigil, attend a short book signing with author Joey Camen, who wrote about his life with his rescue dog, Snoopy. The evening’s events will be recorded, as well, so that memorial DVDs may be created. Check the website for information on submitting your animals’ names and photos ahead of blessing for the Program Book, and ordering a DVD and other materials (these are optional, not required).

Saint Andrew’s asks that you RSVP for Honoring the Animals so that they may know how many attendees to expect.

If you cannot make it to the vigil on Sunday night, you might take a moment to contribute to an animal welfare organization, do some volunteer work, or place a memorial planting in your yard. More ideas for honoring your animals are listed here.
