    Bit to Do

Even if you’re not a huge fan of "Peter Pan," everyone can relate to the underlying theme of the story: not wanting to grow up. It’s this aspect of Neverland that has enticed children and adults alike for so many years, making "Peter Pan" a classic.

This story is being brought to life at Derby Dinner Playhouse as “Broadway’s timeless musical.”

John Hacker does an amazing job as Peter Pan. I’m used to seeing women portray Peter Pan onstage, but I really enjoyed Hacker as the character. He brought a boyish charm to the performance, which was refreshing. Madeline Perrone also played Wendy Darling to a tee, but the performance of the night goes to Paul Kerr as a wonderfully silly yet equally terrifying Captain Hook.

The best thing about the aisle seats at Derby Dinner playhouse is the close-up look you get at the actors. Sitting next to me on the aisle seat was a little girl named Anneliese who chose to wear her Tinkerbell costume to the play. As Kerr made his first entrance as Captain Hook, he stopped and commented on Anneliese's “lovely wings.” He also made the children in the front row cringe and cling to their parents. It’s this combination of silly and terrifying that makes Hook one of the best fairy tale villains, and Kerr has that combination down to an art.

It would be a crime not to mention the wonderful choreography of the Native American dances, the creative set pieces and the magical flights of the characters. Derby Dinner never ceases to amaze me with its use of space and imagination.

This production would make for a great family outing. There are two small intermissions perfect for bathroom breaks, and the performance isn’t as long as other shows I’ve seen at Derby Dinner. As always, a buffet meal with something for everyone is included with your ticket. Parents, you don’t have to worry about where to eat beforehand!
