Kids art classes Saturdays at Preston Arts Center

If you have a talented artist in your family, you may be looking for extra-curricular classes to supplement what your mini-Manet is creating at school. Even if he/she is lucky enough to have an inspiring art teacher, an outside class will only enhance your child's natural gifts.

Many art classes around town have already begun, but there are still openings for some courses at Preston Arts Center. Here's a quick round-up:

Painting for ages 5-8 years, beginning Saturday, March 9 through Saturday, April 6 from 9:30-11:00 am. The cost is $80 for 5 sessions, and supplies are included.

Acrylic Painting for Fun for ages 7-12 years, beginning Saturday, March 9 through Saturday, April 6 from 11:30 am-1:00 pm. Again, it’s $80, including supplies.

Calligraphy would be fun for artsy 6-12 year olds, and class begins on April 13 and ends on May 18. Before you shake your head and cross this one off your list, class does not meet on Derby Day, May 4. They’re one step ahead of you. The cost is $70 and materials are included. Class meets from 9:30-11:00 am.

Sculpt It! for ages 8-13 years also meets April 13-Mary 18 with the exception of May 4. Class time is 11:30-1:00 pm and the cost is $80 including supplies.

Teens 13-17 years old can take Portfolio Printmaking on March 23-April 27 from 2:00-4:00 pm. The cost for these six sessions is $130 including supplies.

Last winter, my then-five year old took a painting class at Preston's and it really helped her skills and perspective. She felt like a big kid in a classroom full of other artists, with her own canvas, and able to mix her own paints. The just-long-enough sessions held her attention without boring her, and participating helped to pass those crummy winter weekends.

Visit to view the full schedule (including adult classes) and enroll online. Preston Arts Center is located in Gardiner Lane Shopping Center on Bardstown Road, conveniently right off I-264.

    About Anna Frye

After living in Chicago, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Colorado, my husband and I made our (hopefully? probably?) final move back to Louisville, where I was born and raised.'s nice to be home. Now I'm busy making sure my three little ones learn to love the quirks and traditions of their new hometown: Kentucky Derby Festival, no school on Oaks Day, grits and hot browns (not necessarily together), monograms, parks, festivals, and even our seasonal allergies.
