We asked students from the Kentucky College of Art + Design at Spalding University to create illustrations representing Louisville neighborhoods, as grouped into five major areas. Here is the artwork, with brief explanations of what inspired each artist.

    1. SOUTH END
“This illustration serves as a logo for my neighborhood, with symbols of the south side that represent the best parts of Louisville. I’ve depicted Churchill Downs, Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Iroquois Park and Dixie Highway.”

    2. SOUTHERN INDIANA
“Jeffersonville has the essence of a quiet small town interested in preserving its history and nature. The architecture and many small businesses, like Too Tired Bike & Bean coffee shop and Schimpff’s Confectionery, help create the folksy atmosphere. This illustration combines the various architectural elements into different perspectives, alongside natural elements.”

    3. EAST END
“I consider the East End a sort of suburban daydream. This illustration depicts people walking down the street of a friendly neighborhood, levitating a few feet above the ground. The clouds below their feet show the dreamlike idealism of the suburbs, while still showcasing the family-friendly atmosphere.”

    4. WEST END

“The happy, smiling faces in this illustration depict my experience in the West End, opposing the stereotypical views of the area. The portraits show the amiable, close and homey atmosphere that I know and love.”

    5. DOWNTOWN

“This illustration shows an interior space that is meant to become personal to the viewer, with ‘Easter eggs’ such as posters, pictures, shopping bags and different aspects of Louisville culture.”
