The Late Late Breakfast is a show that was launched in the lobby of, what was then still The Comedy Caravan, in Mid-City Mall – with no more than a roster of alt-comics, a plate of donuts and a microphone.  The show was the brain child of comedian Tyler Jackson.  When Jackson, and show regular Danny Maupin moved to Chicago, they quickly established the show there – it lingered in its home club for a while under new leadership but soon faded away, while the Chicago version of the Late Late Breakfast flourished, and has become one of the most in demand open-mics in the city.

This month, Jackson and Maupin are taking Late Late Breakfast on the road with "Late Late Breakfast To Go Tour".  This is the show's first multi-city tour, and of course they included the birth place of the show on the schedule.  Late Late Breakfast Homecoming Show is going to feature both Chicago-based, formerly Louisville-based, comics, plus many of the local comedians who performed on the show over the years.

So what makes Late Late Breakfast different than other open-mic shows?  Well, they’re self described as:  “kinda like an open mic, but kinda like a comedy showcase, but kinda like a game show, but kinda like an improv show.”

The comics butt heads against a system of rules and challenges determined by the hosts or the audience that dictate their performance. The shows could consist of anything from an impromptu puppet show or pie fight or Easter Pageant, to giving a guided tour in a trolley car or smashing fruit like Gallagher or pitching in a baseball game involving the entire audience.

The show has been featured on the Chicago Comedy Exposition (2014 and 2015 - coming this July), Memphis Comedy Festival, the Orlando Indie Comedy Fest and was just listed as one of the top experimental comedy shows in Chicago by Time Out. Late Late Breakfast has also been featured in the Chicago Tribune and has been recommended by the Chicago Reader and Brightest Young Things.

Late Late Breakfast Homecoming show will be held at Kaiju on June 20th beginning at 4:30 PM.  Admission is free.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
