It won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1998.

It is the fourth longest running musical in the history of Broadway.

It was the first Broadway production to gross $1 billion dollars.

And now, that epic show is coming back to Louisville.

Previously gracing the stage of the Kentucky Center in 2007, The Lion King makes its triumphant return to Louisville for its third appearance, after first bringing Pride Rock to the Possibility City in 2003, five years after its initial opening on Broadway.

Since then, Simba, Mufasa, Rafiki, Pumbaa, and Timon have made their way across five continents and back again.

The story shadows the movie of the same name, released in 1994, that you watched ad nauseam on your VCR while you frolicked around your living room singing “Hakuna Matata.”

But the musical itself has significantly more spectacle and grace than you yourself produced, having over 40 performers, and some of the most elaborate and innovative costumes Broadway has ever created.

Due to its popularity, The Lion King will run for nearly a month, four times as long as most productions that pass through Louisville. Despite its extended run, a limited amount of tickets remain.

The Lion King is a part of the PNC Broadway in Louisville series and runs March 3-29. Tickets start at $33 and are available online or by calling the box office at 502.584.7777.
