502 Power Yoga (502PY) is just barely a year old and has already been breaking down barriers for the Louisville community. 502 Power Yoga's staff is active in outreach programs and looks for ways to support local makers, movers, and shakers in the community. It’s no surprise they decided to include live music in one of their Friday Flow classes.

The live music at 502PY has varied from all kinds of local musicians including Heidi Joy Stenson of the Moonlight Peddlers and Zac Goldstein. Cellos, violins, guitars, and voices have all been wedged into the studio right alongside the students and instructor. To learn more, I went to studio owner Cat Larimore.

Louisville.com: How is this different than a regular class at 502?

Cat Larimore: The flow/sequence is really the same, but since music is present, there is often times less instruction than a regular class. These classes tend to be light, playful, and fun; more about movement than about really digging. The best part is, though, you’re usually having so much fun that you don’t notice what a great workout you’re getting!

LC: What is some of the best feedback you have had with the classes?

Cat Larimore: There are students who come on Friday because it’s such a fun, non-serious release for them after a long week.

LC: What do you personally love most about the class?

Cat Larimore: I’ve always been a music lover, so I love hearing the instructors’ personalities come through in their playlists plus learning about new music.

LC: What is the average class size?

Cat Larimore: It really varies, especially a 6AM compared to a 6PM, but on average I would say we have about 12-15 students in a live music class.

LC: How does live music add value to a yoga class?

Cat Larimore: Personally, live music resonates and connects deep within my soul. To have live music present in the room when I’m doing a practice that feeds my soul, it creates this beautiful harmony—for 60 minutes I feel pure love and joy.
