    Bit to Do

    Print this page

The days of flip flops, backyard grilling, summer tans and water slides are finally here folks. So naturally we rounded up a list of all our summer favorites the Ville has to offer. In no particular order, here's everything a Louisvillian should do before the summer ends.

    1. Listen to live music.

Every year it never fails; as soon as I can shed that jacket and head outdoors to get my jam on, I do. There's just something beautiful about the sound of good music wafting through the warm summer air, lightning bugs flickering all about, and a drink in my hand. It just so happens Louisville's music scene is pretty hip happening this time of year, and most of the events are free (cue round of applause). There's Waterfront WednesdaysRYE's Back Porch Sessions, the Highlands Summer Concert Series, Sunset Concert Series, and Jeffersonville's RiverStage Summer Concert Series just to name a few.

    2. Get your drink on outside.

People have been drinking outside for centuries. And for good reason too. Its just more fun that way. Beer gardens like The Holy Grale (strung with lights and glorious greenery),  Apocalypse Brew Works (where you can find every flavor of beer imaginable), and Four Peg's (that chicken and waffle sandwich) offer low-key outdoor spaces to have a pint with friends. There's also patios at places like Garage Bar (where light up ping pong tables and artfully constructed pizza and grass benches are a plenty) and El Camino (come for their margaritas, stay for the fire pits) that are worthy of sipping the summer away.

    3. Live the ballpark life.

A hot dog, cold beer and the sound of a stadium in the throws of America's favorite past time. Need I say more?

    4. Ice cream.

Everybody knows its not summer until Dairy Kastle opens. Of course, there's also our other summer staples that help make the dog days of summer a bit more bearable: The Widow's Walk Ice Creamery, Dairy Del, Comfy Cow, and The Arctic Scoop.

    5. Swim at the Southside Quarry.

While it's a rather long trip to the nearest beach, those of us in the Ville can still beat the heat at the Southside Quarry. Privately owned, this speakeasy is the perfect place to take a dip (if you're 21 and older that is). ID is required as well as a $10 donation to get in (100% of the profits go to local charities). Be sure to bring your own food, beverage and flotation device. Also, don't forget to like their Facebook page before you stop by. Then get to cliff jumping and soaking up that sweet summer sun.

    6. Spend the day at the Flea off Market.

While the Flea off Market happens the first weekend of every month, its definitely more fun to go during the summertime. After all, there's nothing better than treasure hunting with an ice cream sandwich in hand. While the market offers plenty of sweet treats from a variety of food vendors, it's also home to booths loaded with books, records, antiques, jewelry, clothing, handmade goods, artwork and a heck of a lot more. There isn't a more perfect place to peruse the day away.

    7. Catch a movie at the Georgetown Drive-In.

Okay, so this one's not in Louisville. But its so close it mine as well be! Super affordable, this two screen, cash only drive-in is always a summer must. Pack up the family for a night under the stars, and be sure to hit the concession stand (its sinfully delicious).
