Fernando Martinez is doing it again. Apparently not content to rest on his laurels (Coconut Beach, El Taco Luchador,  and The Place Downstairs/Cena all opened last year, to say nothing of Guaca Mole and Mussel & Burger Bar) the Martinez team is opening another restaurant, Artesano Tapas, Vinos y Mas in Westport Village.

Artesano will be located in the old AP Crafters space in Westport Village, at 1320 Herr Lane. “It’s going to be up-to-date, trendy, new Spanish tapas,” Rick Moir, who will split his managerial duties between Cena and Artesano says. “We’ve talked about doing sangrias on tap, cocktails on tap, and there’s really not another restaurant here [in Louisville] that does that…it will be a little different than what everyone is used to.”

“And we’re going to have a wood-fired oven behind the bar,” interjects Allan Rosenburg. Rosenburg, previously of Papalino’s and currently of Cena, will be involved in the project as well. When asked what kind of menu items were in the works, he was vague, “everything. Charred octopus out of the wood-fired oven. We’ve talked about going to Spain for a week [for inspiration.]”

So when will Artesano Tapas be open and accepting reservations? Moir hinted it could be around Derby, but noted wisely that sometimes these things are unpredictable. “Luchador took like, two week to open,” he laughed, while the concept tentatively planned for the old Papalino’s space across from El Taco Luchador has been in the works for awhile.

Martinez is currently searching for an executive chef and sous chef for Artesano.
