According to CBS, University of Louisville assistant basketball coach Marvin Menzies is set to be named the next head coach at New Mexico State today. Broadcast reports (WLKY-TV, Louisville) also suggested that former Pitino player (UK) Walter McCarty may be in line to replace Menzies at U of L.
The 6-foot-10 McCarty, 33, (pictured left) is a native of Evansville, Ind. He played on Pitino’s 1996 national championship team, was selected by the New York Knicks as the 19th pick in the first round of the ’96 National Basketball Association Draft and played 10 years in the NBA, finishing up with the Los Angeles Clippers last season.
At New Mexico State, Menzies will replace former Cardinal assistant Reggie Theus, who recently moved on to become head coach of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. Menzies is the second U of L aide to accept a head coaching job since the /files/storyimages/of last season. Earlier, Kevin Willard became the new coach at Iona College after a 10-year stint with Pitino in Boston and Louisville.
Menzies, 45, grew up in Los Angeles, earned an economics degree from UCLA, earned a master’s from Cal State Sacramento and has been an assistant at U of L, UNLV, USC, San Diego State and Santa Monico City College. He and his wife, Tammy, have a daughter Andreanna, a son Andre and their niece Aja.

NOTEBOOK - For those folks at New Mexico State hoping to grab a piece of Theus’ six-figure buyout, not so fast. It turns out that Theus’ contract with athletic director McKinley Boston allowed him to depart Las Cruces to coach at Southern Cal, UNLV or the NBA with no penalty.
Theus guided the Aggies to a 25-9 finish last year. His team won the WAC Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. The squad’s 19-win turnaround was the best reversal in the NCAA over the past two seasons.
The list of former Pitino assistants or players who have gone on to become head coaches now totals 22, including such active coaches as Menzies, Theus, Billy Donovan (Florida), Travis Ford (Massachusetts), John Pelphrey (Arkansas), Ralph Willard (Holy Cross), Tubby Smith (Minnesota), Herb Sendek (Arizona State), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati) and Scott Davenport (Bellarmine).
