    What To Do

National Mammography Day is Friday, October 19, 2012 and the American Cancer Society continues to urge women 40 and older to get a yearly mammogram. To help remind women about the vital importance of scheduling a yearly mammogram, the Society provides a free mammogram reminder tool at where women can sign up to receive an email reminding them to schedule their yearly mammography test.

Mammography can often detect breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is more effective. On average, mammography will detect about 80 percent to 90 percent of breast cancers in women without symptoms. Death rates from breast cancer in the U.S. have been declining since 1990, due in large part to early detection by mammography screening and improvements in treatment. So, ladies, take time to make your appointment!

In addition to National Mammography Day, the American Cancer Society encourages individuals to take a stand in the fight against breast cancer by participating in the 15th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer on Sunday, October 28 at Waterfront Park in Downtown Louisville. There is no pre-registration or registration fee. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the noncompetitive, family-friendly, 5K walk will start 1 p.m.. For more information, visit or call 584-WALK.
