    I am a long time fan and regular of all of Toki Masabuchi's culinary projects, starting back when she worked for Seafood Connection at their now nonexistent location on Bardstown Road. Back then, she prepared take out sushi and small tapas for carry out. I was ecstatic when I heard she was opening Maido Essential Japanese and heartbroken when the establishment, where I had celebrated 3 consecutive birthdays, closed. 

    Now my partner and I regularly go to Dragon King's Daughter on Bardstown Road,  an easy five minutes from our apartment. You might ask why we would venture ten minutes across the river for their new location in New Albany, IN.  To start, the new restaurant has an expanded tapas menu and hosts some new sushi creations as well. In addition, the interior is fabulous. Like their Bardstown Road location, large windows contribute to a sunny and bright atmosphere accented by lovely dark polished wood trim on the bar and windows.  In addition, Bank Street Brew House is literally across the street so if you want some after dinner libation, you can either stay and enjoy what Dragon King's Daughter has to offer or hop across the street.

    We enjoyed a lunch of a variety of selections. The agedashi tofu was prepared with onion, carrot, and shiitake mushrooms and had a thicker, more robust sauce then the versions found in traditional Japanese restaurants. We then tucked into some mammoth pork and crab shumai, served with a savory soy sauce based dipping sauce. We wanted a little more sweetness in our cheese gyoza drizzled with blackberry vinaigrette. The chicken wings were rich and tender and crispy on the outside, though we both agreed adding cilantro or more ginger might brighten the flavor a bit. To wash it all down, we each ordered a pint and enjoyed some beer from the region. The staff was courteous and kind as usual. 

    Dragon King's Daughter in New Albany is a great destination meal if you want to get away from the usual crowds in the city for a short while. Not only is the interesting menu worth the trip, so is the atmosphere and the friendly faces.
