What began as a simple, quiet night in the middle of the week quickly turned into an all-night full contact karaoke dance-a-thon when a friend and I were bored and decided to venture to the Highlands for “one quick drink.” Little did we know on that Wednesday night that we would discover the mother of all midweek parties tucked away behind the front doors of Baxter’s 942 Bar & Grill.

We knew something was up when we couldn’t find a parking spot on Baxter Avenue at 11pm on a Wednesday night and there were a great deal of cabs waiting on the side streets. Our best guess was that the thick crowd must have been gathered at Baxter Avenue’s Wick’s Pizza for the restaurant’s celebration-worthy “Wicky Wednesday.” And we were right, Wick’s was packed. But what happens when the unlimited “Wicky Wednesday” beer stops flowing and the endless slices of pizza stop cooking?

The crowd makes a retreat to Baxter’s where they can get inside for a three dollar cover and sip on well drinks for one dollar each.

That’s right, Louisville, any well drink for the price of just one dollar all night on Wednesdays at Baxter’s.

We knew our night was about to take a drastic turn after we paid the bouncer, made our way inside to the main bar area and immediately noticed the live band performing on a small stage in front of the dance floor. The temporary singer for this band was a college-age girl who was belting sloppy lyrics to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Live karaoke at its best.

After grabbing a drink, my friend and I explored the rest of the venue. The small dance floor and bar, along with a few tables and booths for those who actually go to Baxter’s to dine, were located near the front entrance. The short staircase leading up to the back room held several pool tables and another bar, along with the entrance to Baxter’s side bar which features open windows facing Baxter Avenue and another entrance to the patio smoking section located in the back.

Regardless of your karaoke skills, Baxter’s 942 Bar & Grill is the place to go in Louisville when you’re looking to liven up the night. It brings a little piece of Fourth Street Live! to the Highlands. And plus, where else in Louisville are you going to find a gin and tonic for just a dollar? But if you’re not one to party during the week, Baxter’s still offers the same crowded dance floor on Saturday nights as well, but drinks are full price and there’s a deejay instead of a live band.
