The Real Nasty takes blues and country, infuses jazz, and wraps it up in a nice bow with a rock n’ roll twist.  Bassist and songwriter Ryan Lukas linked up with Jacob Groopman (guitar) and drummer Matthew “Smitty” Smith to form The Real Nasty in 2009 out of Oakland, California. Conceived as a rock/country band, their style developed to include many genres of music.

The shift in genres coincides with a shift in instruments.  The core percussion element in the music shifted from a cajón to a traditional drum kit complete with bass and snare drums.  The additional percussion allowed the band to expand into a distinct rock sound.

Ryan opened his bedroom door to hear friend Jacob wanted to form a band and replied, “That’s real nasty”, and thus the name stuck.  With three releases on the books for Ninth Street Opus Records, the band is taking the music to the people, on tour in support of their latest release, Dirty Dollars.

Dirty Dollars (2011) is “loud, sexy music”, as Lukas puts it, speaking of the introduction of the traditional drum kit. The first two releases, Paper City (2009) and Strangers and Friends (2010) intentionally focused on rock and country and deliberately omitted the traditional snare drum sound.

For the first trip to Louisville, Ryan and the guys are stoked about seeing Churchill Downs, the Waterfront, and tasty food from The Bristol.  The Real Nasty will play tonight along with Douglas Lucas and the Whispers and Sons of Fathers.  Three bands, five bucks, good times!

The doors open at 8 pm, music starts promptly at 8:30 pm.  Tickets are $5 at the door, which is open to those 21 years of age or older.
