Remembering Stitzel-Weller: THe January Filson Salon At Oxmoor
    Print this page

If you haven’t been to the Filson Bourbon Salon at Oxmoor Farm yet, you really need to go.  The next session takes place January 21 at 5:30 p.m.  The topic of this salon is Remembering Stitzel Weller.

Stitzel Weller is the current home of The Bulleit Experience at Stitzel Weller, as well as the home to Diageo North America’s Orphan Barrel project.  There hasn’t been any distilling there since it was shut down in 1991, though Diageo has plans to open a small artisanal distillery there by Derby Day 2015 and a bottling line is also in the works.

The Stitzel Weller property has a lot of historical significance in the bourbon world.  Arthur Phillips Stitzel of the Stitzel lineage designed and patented the rick system that is still used today to store and mature barrels of bourbon.  Pappy Van Winkle had his office at this location for decades.  Many prominent bourbon brands were birthed and/or nurtured to maturity there.

It is also where Master Distiller Ed Foote rose to prominence.  Foote will be on the panel for the salon along with Julian Van Winkle and Sally Van Winkle Campbell.  The Van Winkles will share memories of their patriarch and Foote will share memories of the distillery operations up to its closing in 1991.  Tickets are extremely limited and are expected to sell out quickly, so get yours early.  This is going to be one for the history books.
