If you're an animal lover, Stevie Ray's Blues Bar is the place to be on Sunday, June 6.
One horrifying day last July, people at Joe's Crab Shack were shocked to see a man throw a dog over the Clark Memorial Bridge. The dog survived the 80 foot drop and was immediately adopted by Kelsey Westbrook, who renamed her Sunny.
Sunny not only survived her plunge, but inspired the creation of the Saving Sunny Foundation. The foundation's goal is to fund animal cruelty enforcement officer training and equipment with the LMPD to help protect other animals like Sunny. They're doing the good work of spreading word about the link between domestic violence and animal abuse, letting people know how to report that scary neighbor who beats their dog, and to provide a "Sanctuary from Violence" for confidscated animals and animals whose owners are the victims of domestic abuse. The last part is especially important, as no one who has been abused wants to leave their pets behind while they're in a shelter or other transitional housing.
Stevie Ray's "Saving Sunny Benefit" is a great place to meet other animal lovers (*ahem* consider this a hint to singles). Bluegrass Brewing Company is providing free vegeterian appetizers. There'll also be a raffle, cocktails, and five live bands. The doors open at 4, the music starts at 5. Play your cards right and maybe next weekend you'll be taking your dogs out for a walk with a new friend.
