When I interviewed Louisville artist Jeff Gaither a few months ago for an article for, "Louisville's Jeff Gaither's 'art for the criminally insane' goes local, gets fine," the first piece of furniture I noticed in his house was an electric chair. While Old Sparky was a fake, it left an impression. Coupled with his 30 years of experience producing horror art, Gaither was an easy choice to be the first Louisvillian asked to share his best suggestion for scaring children on Halloween with's readers. Here's his idea: This is easy to do and works really well. The door where you give out candy must have a removable screen or metal sections at the bottom. Remove it and replace it with a cut section from a large black plastic garbage bag. Once in place cut a slit down the middle about five inches long. Halloween night, turn out the lights and have a small candle burning in the back of the room. All you have to do now is sit on the floor (behind the door) and wait for kids to knock. As they are looking at the candle, thrust your hand out of the hole through the black plastic bag and scream. It works every time! Some kids will run, some scream, some will even drop their candy bag. I have seen it work on adults also. For more information: Check out's special Halloween section.(Photo: Flickr/indigoprime)
