There is nothing worse than going out to dinner with a ton of people, having an amazing time, and then the check comes. It is always a buzz kill trying to figure out what each person owes and how much they should tip. Let's be honest, generally someone ends up putting in way more than they truly owe to make up the difference. This is a small annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless. However, since I've moved to Louisville, I have not had this issue.
Every time I go out with a group or my husband and I go out to dinner with another couple, the server always asks, "Do you want separate checks?" Now this might not seem like a big deal to most, but I'm telling you, from my experience living in different places and being a server in a few different cities, this is not a common practice. Normally, outside of Louisville, you either have to just split and bill or ask the server to separate the checks...then they look at you with disgust. I actually worked at a restaurant in Evanston, IL where we were told to tell the patrons that we couldn't separate a check in more than two parts. That was a blatant lie, but separating was always time consuming and left you with a lesser tip, so we fibbed.
Here in Louisville, the servers are ready to separate the checks and accommodate the patrons whole-heartedly...regardless if it is a pain or not. In all of the restaurants I've been to so far, servers ask before you even have to request it. It is a small thing to notice, but noticeable for sure. I just want the servers of Louisville to know that it is appreciated and it is just one of those small things that collectively make Louisville friendly, approachable, and overall a great place to live.
