It was evident that Shawn Flarida was proud of his horse, Wimps Chocolate Chip, after their ride in the CRI3*. He should be very proud as they posted a runaway score of 228 to take the individual first place. In an interview earlier in the day with Louisville.com Flarida said Wimps Chocolate Chip was an awesome horse who had won $100,000. He said the horse has such a good mind and great trainability. He’s had the horse since he was a 3 years old. Flarida is sponsored by Ariat and rode on the Ariat Boots Team along with Shane Brown and Sam Smith in the team competition.
Coming in second place in the individual competition was Tom McCutcheon on Chick Olena Starbuck with a score of 224. Craig Schmersal on Whizs Katrina came in third place with a score of 223.5.
Team SmartPak were the winners in the team competition with a score of 664. Team SmartPak consisted of Tom McCutcheon on Chic Olena Starbuck, Mandy McCutcheon on Don Julio Whiz, Pete Kyle on A Ruf Gal.
Coming in second in the team competition was the Ariat Boots Team whose members were Shawn Flarida on Wimps Chocolate Chip, Shane Brown on Houston Shine, and Sam Smith on Dun Its Chico with a score of 661.5.
In a tight team competition Team Purina came in a close third just a half point behind the second place team with a score of 661. Team Purina consisted of Craig Schmersal on Whizs Katrina, Shane Brown on Shepherd Star, and Jarvis Anderson on Pretty Peppy Chec.
The top placed riders in the individual competition shared in $50,000 in prize money, and the team competition garnered an additional $50,000 in prize money. Ariat is the title sponsor of the Ariat Kentucky Reining Cup Event.
Tonight’s, Saturday, April 28, competition features the exciting World Championship Freestyle competition where riders and horses, in costume, will ride custom choreographed patterns to music. Several celebrity riders are slated to participate in the freestyle competition including event riders David and Karen O’Connor, Gina Miles, and Hall of Fame Jockey Chris McCarron. This event is always a crowd pleaser and will be held from 5:30-7:30 pm in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.
