The Sheepdogs are a kick-butt southern rock power trio from the Great White North.  The Saskatoon musical collective has been kicking around for the better part of a decade.  They are a powerful, classic rock infused band that has honed a live show so powerful you cannot quickly forget it.

The guys self-released their first three albums, “Trying to Grow,” “The Sheepdogs’ Big Stand,” and “Learn & Burn.”  The albums were well-received in Saskatoon, and the band soon built a large, loyal fanbase that was mostly constrained to Canada.  They didn’t cross over in American until 2011, when they entered a “You Choose the Cover” contest for Rolling Stone Magazine.  A contest where the magazine’s readers would choose an unknown band to grace the illustrious cover.

The Sheepdogs won the contest and appeared on the August 18th, 2011 cover of the magazine.

American loved the burly Canadians that sounded like they were born in post-WWII Georgia, and smoked reefer in garage parties with the Allman Brothers.  Their thick guitar riffs dripped with a southern accent – and their lyrics were refreshingly earnest and honest.  In 2012, they finally put out their first wide release self-titled “The Sheepdogs.”  The album was produced by Patrick Carney, drummer for The Black Keys.

They have spent the last three years consistently on the road supporting the album, while concurrently writing a collection of songs that will make up their follow-up, “Future Nostalgia,” which is set to be released October 2nd of this year.  The band has already headed back on the road in support of the album and will be playing Louisville this week.  They have won Juno and CASBY Award, appeared on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” and performed at Bonnaroo.

The Sheepdogs will be performing at Zanzabar September 10th at 9:00 PM.  Tickets are still available for $15.  Buffalo Killers will be opening the show.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
