    Bit to Do

It's Thunder eve and you're probably getting ready for the big day.  Thunder Over Louisville has become the nation's largest annual fireworks event.  Hundreds of thousands of locals and folks from out of town make plans to attend the show. Where's "your" spot?  I know lots of families who have staked a claim in certain areas and try to get the same spot year after year.  Unfortunately, due to flooding many favorite spots will be inaccessible in Southern Indiana.

Basically the whole "riverside" stretch in Clarksville and Jeffersonville has been closed because of the high water.  That will knock out much of the free viewing space in Southern Indiana.  Keep in mind there are still areas available, but watch out for private property.  Many of the hotels and restaurants along the river are hosting parties, you should call ahead if you haven't already reserved a spot.

Southern Indiana has several other places you can watch Thunder without getting into the storm so to speak.  If you are interested in viewing the airshow or pyrotechnics live and don't care to be at the river or see the Second Street Bridge you might check out some of the following locations.  The Greentree Mall parking lot allows a view of the shows, nothing up close, but still nice to see.  The New Albany riverfront, Indiana University Southeast parking lot (you will need to buy a parking pass for $1.00) and even some areas up in Floyds Knobs provide a nice view.  If you want to stick around the Jeffersonville area you might try some areas around Clark Memorial Hospital, Jeffersonville High School or the Meijer store.

As for me and my family, we will enjoy all of it from the comforts of our home this year.   With four small children and cooler temperatures I've decided to plan some alternative activities, maybe even a small cookout and hopefully long naps before "Thunder Power" gets started.

If you go, check out for up to date information on the event, including a list of things you need to leave at home.  Stay warm and have a great time!

    About Roxane Haynes

I am a working mother of four kids, age five and under, this includes two singletons and a set of twins. When I say working, I mean that I stay at home with them, but work my butt off to take care of them and get the "usual" things done for our home. I also help my husband with our business when I can. B.K. (before kids) I worked in the Human Resource field. Stay At Home Mom is by far my favorite career choice to date.
