    Where To Go

Life is funny sometimes, isn't it? An example: I grew up in a very religious household. When I turned eighteen, I went to a small college owned by the afore-mentioned religion. I hated it, and it was there that I began to discover that things aren't necessarily how I was taught they were. Long story short: I eventually rejected my childhood religion. On the other hand, though, we can imagine a very religious person attending a purely secular school. The sight of all the worldliness and “sin” could easily keep our hypothetical student firm in his or her beliefs, and possibly even strengthen them.

The latter scenario is the subject of the book “Blue Like Jazz,” written by Donald Miller, which recently got the big-screen treatment. The film, directed by Christian filmmaker and musician Steve Taylor, has yet to receive a wide theatrical release; however, Rave Motion Pictures Stonybrook presents a special one-time advance screening of the film tonight.

“Blue Like Jazz” tells the story of Don, who, on a whim, decides to leave his conservative college in Texas to attend school at the progressive Reed College in Portland. Culture shock awaits those who make such a drastic change, and Don finds himself re-evaluating his life and questioning everything.

“Blue Like Jazz” plays tonight (tonight being Tuesday) at Rave Stonybrook at 7:00. It doesn't look like advance ticket sales are available online; however, free movie passes can be acquired at Carmichael's bookstore, located at 1295 Bardstown Road and 2720 Frankfort Avenue.

Rave Stonybrook is located at 2745 South Hurstbourne Parkway.

    About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
