Sometimes a mascot can sum up the personality of a team. In many ways a team’s mascot acts as a goodwill ambassador to fans. With that in mind, I take a look at a symbol of modern baseball in the city of Louisville, Buddy Bat.
Now, I know it might seem strange to proclaim a mascot as a sports legend however when one considers what a mascot really brings to a team it’s a no brainer the importance of a positive representative for the club.
And, it’s through this representation that Buddy shows what it means to be a part of the Louisville Bat organization, which is to say a playful and hard working club that knows how to get serious when need be.
That’s what a mascot brings, an attitude- a personality, and since the late 90’s Buddy has brought that in droves. An affable and kid friendly Bat, Buddy has even developed his character more explaining his favorite ball park snack is chili cheese fries and going on to tell patrons that he’s a big fan of “the wave.”
More than that though, Buddy has been the face of the Bats ever since the team switched their moniker from the Redbirds, this is noted without question when one discovers that the Bat that gives the most autographs is consistently Buddy. His character and personality makes him in no uncertain terms a sports legend, instantly identifiable in local athletics.
With four pound shoes Buddy spritely makes his way around the ball park as only he can proving his value in a game by game basis. Regardless of how the team is playing Buddy serves as a reminder of the joy of baseball and what the game means to so many in the Kentuckiana area, and that’s what makes him a sports legend of the ‘Ville.
