WFPL had a story today about how restaurants in Kentucky are struggling in the current economic climate. The costs of food and supplies are going up at alarming rates while more people are holding on to their money and staying home instead of dining out. I’m not going to tell you to dine out more if you’ve made a conscious decision to eat at home to save money. What I am going to tell you though is to please remember and support our independent restaurants. Chain restaurants, for the most part, are going to hang on and ride out most economic fluctuations. Local, independent restaurants aren’t always so lucky. If we want the great level of variety in dining choices that we have now when the economy improves and we have more entertaining dollars to spend we have to take the responsibility to support independent restaurants. If we all do some little things to support independent restaurants I think it will go a long way. For example instead of cheap fast food lunches five days a week maybe you do lunch two days a week at an independent restaurant and brown bag it the other 3 days. I’m sure you’ve got other ideas specific to your tastes and preferences for supporting Louisville’s dining scene so please put them into action. If it’s not abundantly clear already let me tell you that I think the depth of Louisville’s independent restaurants is one of our cities best assets and I want to do everything I can to support them and make sure they survive. So please keep them in my mind when deciding when and how to spend your food dollars.
