Every April Thunder Over Louisville kicks off the Kentucky Derby Festival. An event every Louisvillian knows all too well. We are the home of North America’s largest annual fireworks show, how could anyone forget that? However, as locals, it is easy to take for granted the influence the spectacle has on the city and it's community. Thunder isn’t just the Kentucky Derby’s opening ceremony. It’s an event that brings communities together, something we maybe forget in the midst of the zooming air show and flashing lights. However, “BizBash”, America’s leading outlet for event planning news, ideas, and resources, is here to remind us just how special our big boom in the sky truly is.

Each year “BizBash” releases a list comprised of the top 100 events in the United States. The annual list includes award shows, benefits, and other gatherings that surpass the mark in the event industry. The article claims, “As with all lists, this is subjective,” but they’re Top 100 isn’t based on flashy or over-the-top events. They’re list is comprised of events that are about, “influence, the power to build movements, form communities, and create cultural touch points for those that attend as well as those that don’t,” according to Anna Sekula, “BizBash” editor in chief. “Thunder Over Louisville illustrates why bringing people together at a live experience still matters, even in an age dominated by digital interaction.”

Since 1989 Thunder has been bringing together not only Louisvillians, but our neighbors across the river. Clarksville, Jeffersonville, and New Albany all participate in the annual event as well. As one of nearly 70 events the Derby Festival produces, Thunder has the largest economic impact for any single event with an estimated $56.6 impact for the local economy each year.

Thunder Over Louisville can be found in the category of “Top Festivals, Parades and Holiday Events”. It is alongside other well-known events like, New Year’s Eve in Times Square, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and Mardi Gras.
