Rupp will undoubtedly be filled with the Big Blue Nation tonight and that will help settle the young Kentucky team as the Red Storm of St. John’s University travels to Lexington to face off in what will be an exciting game. With the recent dethroning ceremony courtesy of UNLV, fans are looking to the UNC game up next on the schedule. Fans are anxious to see how the young freshmen will compete against a more seasoned opponent, now that the Cats are on top of the world at #1
There are no other more dedicated fans in basketball than those in Lexington, Kentucky. We love our hoops and plan our lives around UK’s schedule. The SEC-Big East Challenge begins at 7:30p EST as St. John’s comes to Rupp 4-3 on the season off a 78-64 loss to Northwestern to chase the Cats who are cruising comfortably at 6-0 off the 87-63 victory over Portland. In tonight’s contest, it is imperative that Marquis Teague demonstrate excellent ball handling skills. The Storm is notorious for hitting their opponents with little known defenses, forcing turnovers on 25.8% of possessions. The Storm will also try like hell to get inside, so Davis better stand tall tonight, as if that were even an option. The man stands at 6’10” for goodness sake. The Cats need this win to keep the record spotless at Rupp, and stay atop the NCAA rankings, not to mention the momentum when UNC comes to Lexington next week.
Miller, who may…possibly…should start tonight, will be on the war path to keep the Cats on a role and lead the young team. Miller seems to be the glue that brings this team together. Jones along with Miller, come into a game and they don’t mess around about anything. Kidd-Gilchrist will be instrumental with his versatility on the court. Lamb will need to center himself and refine his 3-point shot so the outside game is covered. St. John’s will press and they will press hard. Coach Cal talked about the press following the Portland win, “We only press when we have to. We are good to defend a press. ” Press or no press, the Cats cannot come out sloppy as in the Portland game; they have to be on it from the tip. Speed will be a make or break aspect of the game. Both UK and SJU like it and are not afraid to use it.
This game must be watched by any real UK fan! For your viewing pleasure, ESPN2 will air the game, tip-off is at 7:30p EST. It will be interesting to see the Cats defend the 3, something Cal expressly said the team will work on; not allowing the easy 3’s to go up. The starting lineup for the Cats may see some changes, but if it remains the same, rest assured Miller will be subbed in short order to fix what needs fixin’ where it needs fixin’.
