Does the thought of a heart-shaped box of chocolate make your stomach turn? Let’s face it, unless you’re fourteen, Valentine’s Day is just another day. The cards are corny and roses are overpriced and cliche. I’m in one-hundred percent agreement that I don’t need one day a year to express my love, but as parents and lovers we’re obligated nonetheless. This year, send your sappy greeting in an animal-inspired package from the Louisville Zoo (and help some furry friends eat while you’re at it).

The Louisville Zoo’s Valentine Special is in effect now through February 14th. You can send your chummy message through the A.D.O.P.T.S. program for a mere $35. Your Valentine will receive “The Honey Bee Package” which includes an animal adoption certificate, a picture of the selected “adopted” animal, and a photo button. Spring for the $60 “Lovebird Package” and it includes all of the above plus a plush zoo animal from the gift shop.

Proceeds from the adoption go directly to toward the care of the zoo animals. According to a Louisville Zoo press release, the annual budget for feeding the animals is $400,000! Triton, the 20-year-old sea lion from California, eats 50 pounds of fish a day. Your sweet-heart will not only feel loved, but you will also be helping to feed the furry or feathered creatures in the zoo.
