A visual of the Muhammad Ali Center

I recently had some family members visit. Naturally, we were looking for some outings that would allow us to spend the day letting them get to see some of the city. After going over a list of good local spots, and more tourist based attractions, we decided that one of our stops would be the Muhammad Ali Center.

This would allow us to spend an afternoon getting to better know one of the city’s most famous residents, and to take in some downtown scenery. I had never been to the museum, but have been interested in taking it in since I relocated here. I must admit, it is a great way to spend a few hours, even if you are not exceptionally interested in boxing.

The layout of the museum is very impressive. The team that designed the facility incorporated some really creative thinking into the final product. The boxing ring that doubles as a projection screen is a great fit, and the ability to sit down and view some of Ali’s noteworthy bouts allows visitors to better understand the sporting aspects of the Center. With prime riverfront property, even the waiting areas and the terrace provided some value to the trip.

With exhibits that highlight topics such as the civil rights movement, in addition to Ali’s sporting background, the Muhammad Ali Center has a more diverse set of offerings than many might expect when purchasing their ticket. Visitors are provided an introductory video that showcases some of the more social aspects of the history of the famous heavyweight. The first exhibit focuses largely on the Civil Rights Movement and the history associated with it. It foreshadows the circumstances that lead Ali to be the social figure that he is.

I would recommend that anyone who has not yet visited, take the time to go see the Muhammad Ali Center. It is great for those who are new to Louisville and lifelong residents.
