    Beginnings:

    Ed Lee (of Milkwood, 610 Magnolia and Mind of a Chef fame) is beginning a culinary apprenticeship program in Smoketown to give young men and women who can’t afford culinary school a chance to learn all the components of the restaurant business. Read more details here!

    In case you didn’t already know, the former Jamba Juice downtown is supposed to soon house a Dunkin Donuts. They’re a little late on their opening, though, they told Business First they were hoping to set up shop around October 15.

    A second Brownie’s “The Shed” Grille & Bar is in the works. 

    Endings:

    Nuts N Stuff, on Barret Avenue, is closing at the end of October. Owner Paul Pfister sited lack of foot traffic as part of the reason; the neighborhood used to be much better-visited when Lynn’s Paradise Café was in business. We are sorry to see Nuts N Stuff go after 30 years of business!

    Beer News:

    The 2014 Louisville Brewfest is happening this weekend. For $5 admission, you can drink your heart out and celebrate Louisville’s local brews. Learn more here!

    Four Pegs has a new Executive Chef (Eric Turner) and new bar manager (Philip LeCompte) according to their Facebook Page.

    Mayor Fischer wants to expand Louisville’s craft beer industry, and plans to bring more breweries to the city. Perhaps we are to have a beer trail, as well as a bourbon trail, which I think should probably be dubbed the “Hops hop.”

    Red Yeti Brewing company is now serving their first RYBC brewed beer: Sterling Pale Ale. 

    Eventful:

    On October 18, Ed Lee and wine director Ricardo Barillas are partnering with Copper & Kings for a tasting event at the 610 Magnolia Wine Studio. More details can be found here!

    On October 18, Bistro 301 is hosting Bistro Bites & Beer, a small-plate menu with suggested beer pairing. The proceeds will benefit Derby City Dog Rescue. Find out more and RSVP here!

    On October 18, the Bard’s Town will host the 2nd annual EAT IT! Festival, a celebration of their inaugural chef, Joe Gadansky, with proceeds benefiting the Sophia & Emma Gadansky trust. Learn more here! 

    October 22 will mark Decca’s 2nd Annual Beast Feast – Whole Hog Pickin’. For $39 you can partake in this family-style dinner that will include “hog, sides & dessert” and for $59 you can enjoy paired drinks from Falls City Beer and Copper & Kings. Learn more and RSVP here

    The Mayan Café is holding a vegetarian wine dinner on October 20, you can view the whole menu and see details here

    The Thirsty Pedaler (that wacky, thing you see people pedaling around in downtown) is giving special Halloween tours this Sunday (October 19) and November 2. For $30, participants will stop at Louisville “best haunted locations,” and there will be a tour guide on board telling ghost stories.
